Tjibaou and Temaru

After a common lobbying, Kanaky (New Caledonia) and Ma'ohi Nui (French Polynesia) were pushing to get relisted on the U.N list of non autonmous territories to be decolonized. Sensing huge pressure from the administering power, Kanak leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou asked Oscar Temaru to postpone the case of French Polynesia so that France would not veto the process. They agreed to come back the next year to push Ma'ohi nui ... But Tjibaou got killed that year ... pushing back the french polynesian case in the mists...
